Colonel Woolford, from Nashville, Colonel Lester had despatched that force in pursuit, together with the 3d battalion of the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry, Major Givan. The 4th Kentucky Cavalry, Colonel Smith, having arrived with General Dumont and yourself from Shelbyville, and the 2d battalion of the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry, Colonel Wyncoop, from Nashville, both these forces were dispatched for Lebanon at 2 o'clock P. M. Learning this fact I left Murfreesboro at 5 P. M., taking with me Lieutenant Colonel John G. Parkhurst, of the 9th Michigan Infantry, Assistant Adjutant General Henry M.
