Ninth Regiment Cavalry

In one respect it was exceptional, the 9th being the only Michigan cavalry regiment having the honor of marching with General Sherman's army to the ocean, and composed the escort of General Kilpatrick when he opened communication between that army and the Atlantic coast, and at the time when that important and interesting dispatch from General Howard, of Sherman's army, dated December 9th, 1864, to the American fleet in St. Catherine's Sound, on the coast of Georgia, reaching it on the 13th of that month, saying: "We have had perfect success, and army in fine spirits."
