" Though we have not been in any engagement as a regiment for several weeks, our losses have been very heavy of late. The country around us is literally filled with guerrillas and bushwhackers, who never lose an opportunity of surprising, capturing, and killing (murdering would be the more proper term), small parties of our men who venture outside our pickets.
