Returning, they were ordered to Sedalia, Mo., where they remained about two months, doing effective and valuable service in the way of scouting and dispersing armed bands of guerrillas. In an engagement of this nature the regiment lost a valuable officer in the death of Major Marshall. In a similar engagement, under command of Major C. B. Hunt, sustained another loss of three men killed and seven wounded, but achieved a victory over the enemy, three times their number.
