Organizations
The "Merrill Horse" was a Missouri organization, and served during the whole term of its service with the Western armies. It is known to have been actively engaged, and to have seen much service in the field, but the returns of these companies are very meagre in.the details of their operations, consequently it has been impossible to give a full and satisfactory sketch of their movements and services. The companies were at Nashville, Tenn., on January 1st, 1865, and on the 8th took steamers for Eastport, Miss., arriving there on the 15th, and on the llth of February left that point, via Florence, Hunts-ville, Stevenson, and Bridgeport, Ala., for Chattanooga, Tenn., where the regiment remained until March llth, when they crossed the Tennessee river and marched with the regiment on a scout to the eastward of Chattanooga, but not finding the enemy, returned to camp next day.
