A correspondent New York Herald wrote:
" Yesterday Kilpatrick, who held the advance of the army, found the rebels at Grove-ton. Skirmishing immediately took place the enemy falling back to Buckland's Mills, where he was found to be in strong force, consisting of infantry, artillery, and cavalry, posted on the opposite side of the Broad Bun. The 5th Michigan Cavalry, under com mand of Colonel Alger, and the 6th Michigan were dismounted and deployed as skirmishers, using their celebrated weapon, the Spencer rifle, with deadly effect upon the enemy.
