Michigan Cavalry Brigade 2


Being here attacked, March 2d, by a large body of the enemy's forces, the Union cavalry were obliged to retire. The main body of the regiment joined General Butler's forces at New Kent C. H. A detachment of the regiment had accompanied the force under Colonel Ulric Dahlgreen, march Ing via Frederick's Hall Station to Dover's Mill, twelve miles above Richmond, on' the James river, where it arrived on the 2d of March. The command then moved down to within five miles of Richmond, the detachment being in the advance, and charging the enemy's lines near the city, drove them from their first line of fortifications.
