They did not reach the immediate vicinity of Richmond until afternoon, when everybody was on the alert, Kilpatrick having already made his attack.
Colonel Dahlgreen's detachment was divided for the accomplishment of different objects. One party attempted to cross the river, but were repulsed. A very sharp fight ensued, and, rinding the enemy in superior numbers and confronting them on every road, the whole force was compelled to fall back.
In attempting to cut their way out, Dahlgreen with about one hundred and fifty men got separated from the rest. In cutting his way out he encountered the enemy at Walkertown;
