Michigan Cavalry Brigade 2

In this selection were included detachments from the 1st, 5th, 6th, and 7th Michigan Cavalry, in command respectively of Colonels Stagg, Gould, Kidd, and Litchfield. The raid was successful so far as cutting several railroads between General Lee's army and Richmond, but failed in the main object—the release of the Union prisoners in Richmond. The command proceeded to the Rapidan, crossing at Ely's Ford. From thence the column inarched to Spottsylvania Court House, reaching there without encountering the enemy.
