Following the battle of Gettysburg, these regiments were engaged with the enemy in Maryland, daring July, at the following points: Monterey, 4th Cavetown, 5th; Smith town, Boonsborongh, Hagerstown, and Williamsport, 6th; Boonsborough, 8th; Hagerstown and Williamsport, 10th; Falling Waters, 14th; and Snicker's Gap, Va., on the 19th.
While Meade's army was following up Lee and crowding him on to the banks of the Potomac, and while he was hurriedly crossing a portion of his army on a bridge which he had constructed at Falling Waters, Kilpatriek, who then had in his command the 1st, 5th, 6th, and 7th Michigan Cavalry, discovered the movement, and suddenly struck the enemy's rear guard, driving it into the river,
