It is singular that the gallantry of a portion of the troops of Michigan, in connection with his own, first brought Ouster into notice, and that the great military reputation he afterwards reached was acquired principally in command of the Michigan Cavalry Brigade, which attained a most enviable national reputation, and was noted, both in the Union and rebel armies, as among -the best cavalry in the service.
His career as a military leader was of the most successful character; his fearless dash and daring achievements made him the terror of his foes and the idol of his officers and men. ,
