Civil War
FOURTH REGIMENT INFANTRY
After arriving at Kelly's Ford I asked and obtained fifteen days' furlough for the purpose of taking a rest, having been continuously on the road day and night in my line of duty since the battle of Malvern Hill. The postmaster of the 62d Pennsylvania was detailed to take my place. He had two large bags of mail matter and some important letters for General Burnside, then commandant at Aquia Creek. He was mounted on a line gray horse, and was well armed, having two large Colt's revolvers and a carbine.
