FOURTH REGIMENT INFANTRY

The regiment participated in the battle of Gettysburg, July 2d and 3d, losing our brave Colonel Harrison H. Jefferds, who was mortally wounded and bayoneted on the . 2d, and died of his wounds on the 3d. I assumed command on the 2d. The enemy haying retreated, the army of the Potomac was soon in pursuit. The casualties of the command at the battle of Gettysburg were—killed, twenty-eight; wounded, eighty; missing and taken prisoners, eighty; total, 188. The Army of the Potomac formed lines of battle near Williamsport, Virginia, July 12th, and on the 13th the enemy crossed the Potomac under the cover of the night.
