FOURTH REGIMENT INFANTRY

Orders were received during the night that we must 'hold the position until 10 A. M. next day, when the 9th army corps would make a general attack, at which time we would be relieved or ordered to go in. '" The 4th, having participated in the first battle of Fredericksburg, December 13th and 14th, 1862, returned to its old position on the north bank of the Rappahannock. On the 30th and 31st of December the regiment, was engaged in a reconnoissance to Morrisville, making a march of thirtythree miles on the latter day. It was engaged in a movement of the 20th of January, 1863, but marching only a few miles returned to camp near Falmoutb, where it remained until May 1st.
