He would often take up a position under cover, and when charged, would fire his volley and secure a new advan-tage ground. By several successful assaults on the enemy, the left of the regi: ment reached the Shelbyville pike just before the head of the column of the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry, charging down the pike, reached this point. Here part of the regiment, consisting of the 1st and 2d Battalions, in command of Captains Grant and Pritchard, became mixed up with the other regiments, and all went charging into Shelbyville at a gallop, throwing the enemy into great confusion, driving them into Duck river, drowning a large number, kill-ing and wounding many more,
