Fourth Cavalry
When within three miles of that place, a halt was ordered to allow the column to close up. Just at daylight the regiment, following two companies of the 4th U. S. Cavalry, acting as an advance guard (the balance of the 4th XL S. Cavalry with the 7th Tennessee Cavalry having been ordered to the left at this point), charged at a furious gallop into and through Middleton, and to a distance of a mile beyond into the camp of the 1st Alabama Cavalry, commanded by Colonel W. W. Allen. The two companies of the 4th IT. S. Cavalry dashed into the camp, taking some prisoners, with whom they fell back to the rear.
