Fourth Cavalry


I dismounted the 4th Michigan Cavalry and placed them on the hillside, close to the rebel position, where they opened fire, killing five. The 7th Pennsylvania at the same time charged up the road, when the enemy fired a volley and retreated on a run. The enemy falling back on his position at Snow Hill, the Union infantry were ordered up, and the cavalry assuming a flanking position he fell back, when Minty's brigade, a little before dark, marched to Liberty and encamped. The command moved towards Alexandria on the 4th, and on the 5th the 4th Michigan and 7th Pennsylvania crossed the country in the direction of Statesville, joining the brigade near Beard's Mills, and proceeded within a short distance of Lebanon
