The regiment, in command of Major Mix, as a part of Minty's brigade, marched from Murfreesboro on March 4th, 1863, on a scout which is covered by a report of Colonel Minty to the Chief of Cavalry, dated March 14th, as follows: " On the 4th inst. I reported to General Sheridan, on the Salem pike, with 863 men composed of parts of the 1st, 2d, and 3d Cavalry Brigades, two companies of the 4th U. S. Cavalry, and Lieutenant Newell's section of artillery. "
