The rebels were soon swept from the main line of works, and then the inner line of redans was carried in detail by assault, and possession had been gained of the entire inner line when the 4th division reached the outer works. The result of this gallant affair was the capture of the city with twenty-five pieces of artillery in position besides seventy-five pieces in the navy-yard, with a large amount of ammunition and stores,
