American Civil War
Fourteenth Regiment Infantry
In the charge the regiment captured the colors of the 40th North Carolina, and six hundred stand of arms, the flag being taken by Private Geo. W. Clute, of I company, from a rebel lieutenant. After the prisoners had been sent to the rear the line was rectified with the intention of pushing forward and capturing the enemy's works. But at that time firing was heard directly in the rear, accompanied by that yell peculiar to the rebels, and at that moment a courier gave information that the enemy was
in the rear.
