American Civil War
Fourteenth Regiment Infantry
When he made his last charge, the men of the 14th Michigan were kept under cover until the enemy approached within thirty yards, when it promptly poured into his massed ranks a most terrific and destructive fire, which was continued for about twelve minutes, and before he could recover from its effects the regiment jumped over its works and charged him, taking as prisoners, unhurt, one general officer, thirty-two officers of all grades, from Colonel down, and two hundred men, together with thirty-eight wounded, and next morning burying in the field seventy-two.
