The colors were in possession of their color bearer and three others, when Lieutenant Witherspoon dashed upon them and demanded their surrender. Sergeant Smith advanced to his support, killing one in the act of firing upon Lieutenant Witherspoon, and capturing the remaining three. There were indeed many acts of individual gallantry upon the part of the officers and men.
