Lieutenant Gifford gallantly presses them on the center with his platoon of Captain Harbaugh's company, and Captain Donahue, coming up at a moment when the scal6 was balancing, rescues Meyers, while Companies B and C, under Davis and Finn, keep the dread artillery silent and in their possession. Two rebel columns now move toward us, and seeing the hopelessness of a struggle against such odds, the Colonel orders us to face to the rear and reverse, and hold the rebel works over which we had just passed.
