American Civil War
Fourteenth Regiment Infantry
Chattanooga, March 14th, 1864. To Major T. C. Fitzgibbon, 14th Michigan Infantry:
If General Grant will send official notice to these headquarters that an exception may be made regarding his orders, your regiment will be left in the saddle.
WM. D. WHIPPLE, Brig. Gen. and Chief of Staff.
My regiment is now on foot. A number have deserted, and an intense dissatisfaction is daily manifest. Some of the men, not mustered for various causes, now refuse to be mustered. My men decline receiving any further installment of bounty, and desire to return the installment already received.
