American Civil War
Fourteenth Regiment Infantry
Much dissatisfaction prevailed in the regiment after its return to the field from "veteran furlough, owing to the fact that it had been equipped and serving as "mounted infantry" for some time prior to its re-enlistment, and that it should continue as a mounted force was held out as an inducement to veteranize and which was considered as a condition of re-enlistment, as appears from the following correspondence with General Thomas, but which on returning to the field was totally ignored. But notwithstanding this breach of contract the regiment served faithfully and gallantly until the close of the war.
