Soon after this, however, they were erased and a canopy of stars on a blue field substituted, thereby adding beauty and meaning to the fact that the last semblance of loyalty to England was to be renounced, an entire separation of the colonies from Great Britain effected, and the advent of a new power, which had by declaration a short time previous, proclaimed a free and. independent state, to be known as the United States of America.

adopted significance.
