We secured an advantageous position on the crest of a hill within one hundred yards of the enemy, and strengthened it by constructing breastworks. Major L. B. Buff, 105th Pennsylvania, now being the senior officer present, assumed command of the brigade. The same evening Major John Williams, A. I. G., 3d division, assumed command by order from division headquarters.
"At 9 o'clock P. M., the brigade was relieved by the 3d brigade, 2d division, 18th army corps, after which it marched back and massed for the night in the immediate vicinity of the Dunn House. During the night Colonel Robert McAllister, 11th New Jersey, was assigned to the command of the brigade. On the morning of the 17th the brigade took the advanced lines on the right of the plank road leading to Petersburg, relieving two brigades (2d and 4th) of the 2d division, 2d army corps.
