FIFTH REGIMENT INFANTRY

"The 11th was occupied in throwing up earthworks by the brigade, while the sharp shooters were engaged in front in their legitimate business. At 10. 30 P. M. the brigade was ordered to march, leaving the position that we then held in charge of other troops.
"Together with the rest of the division and corps, we marched to the extreme left of our lines, and were placed in position preparatory to making an an assault on the enemy's works. The brigade was placed in two lines, the front line commanded by Colonel B. B. Pierce, 3d Michigan, the second line under charge of Colonel J. S. Crocker, commanding brigade.
