United States Civil War
FIFTH REGIMENT INFANTRY
Such troops as I lead are bound to conquer, no matter who leads them.
Please give my compliments to all those Michigan men in Washington who take such interest in this brigade. Say to them that they are fortunate to hail from such a State that has such gallant sons. God bless the State and people of Michigan for the part it and they have taken to crush out this most unholy of all rebellions. Truly, your sincere friend,
H. G. BERRY, Brigadier General in Command of Brigade.
The brigade referred to was composed of the 2d, 3d, and 5th Michigan Infantry and 37th New York Infantry, and this letter was written immediately following the last battle on the Peninsula.
