Civil War Artillery

First Regiment Light Artillery

However the attempt was made, but as over 50 horses had been killed or disabled the guns could not be moved. One gun, the horses of which had been somewhat sheltered by timber, escaped injury. The cannoneers of this piece hurriedly ran it back to the limber, "limbered up, " and ran the piece off. This was the only gun brought from the field. Lieutenant A. H. Bachman had charge of the section to which this gun belonged. In the saving of this piece much credit is due to Sergeant H. E. Burchard, afterwards promoted to a lieutenantcy for bravery and great determination in his efforts to save it, and that, too, in the face of the enemy.
