Civil War Artillery
First Regiment Light Artillery
The rebels occupied the north side in our front, their line of battle extending across the middle of the shoe. About 10 o'clock the firing became brisk on both sides, especially in a thick cedar grove on the right of the field. Here an accident occurred which came very near proving disastrous to our cause.. Early in the day Johnson's division, which composed part of the right wing, was surprised, and the whole wing driven back nearly two miles, with a loss of a brigade and two or three batteries captured.
