The bridges over Barren river were about to be destroyed. General Mitchell immediately ordered us, including the 4th Ohio Cavalry, to make all haste with the hope of saving the bridges. At 11. 30 o'clock we were there, making the last four miles in twenty minutes, but the bridges were destroyed the night previous. Being on an elevated position, we wore enabled to see the rebels distinctly, through a spy glass, busily engaged at the depot, a distance of nearly two miles from us,
