" We left Frederick on the 24th of February, '62 and without any material delay crossed the Potomac at Harper's Ferry and occupied Charlestown, Va. On taking possession we had several trifling skirmishes, confined to the cavalry, in which our regiment was for the first time under fire, and in which several of the companies obtained considerable credit for their dashing charges and gallant behavior.
