Civil War Cavalry
The six guns of Company F, 4th United States Artillery, Lieutenant Ersby commanding, and one section of Company M, 1st New York Artillery, Lieutenant Peabody, held commanding positions near the right of this brigade. The narrow valley which intervened between these two positions, and the plain extending in a fan-like shape beyond, were commanded by a section of Hampton's Battery of Maryland Artillery, under Lieutenant Fleming, in a position on a central elevation immediately in front of the town;
