Civil War Cavalry
At this point five companies of Michigan cavalry were detached as a reconnoitring party under Colonel Brodhead, who, though suffering from a severe illness, volunteered to mount his horse and head his command to observe the road leading towards Winchester.
"At the same time reports were brought thai the center and rear of the train had been seriously attacked, and further threatened. The 2d Massachusetts, 27th Indiana, and 28th New York, with several pieces of artillery, were, in succession, detached for its protection.
