Civil War Cavalry
The National troops bivouacked on the battle-field the night after the victory, and at an early hour in the. morning began a vigorous pursuit of the Confederates towards Strasburg. Meanwhile Shields, who was satisfied that reinforcements for Jackson could not be far off, had sent an express after Williams's division, then far on his way to Centreville. Banks, who was informed by telegraph of the battle, had already ordered it back. He also hastened to Winchester, took command in person, and followed the retreating Confederates up the Valley almost to Mount Jackson.
