First Infantry Civil War
First Michigan Infantry
During this action the officer then commanding the regiment, Captain James H. Wheaton, was killed, being shot through the head with a minie ball.
From a report of Captain A. H. Merritt for September, 1864:
During this month the regiment lay in camp near the Six Mile House on the Weldon railroad and furnished very heavy details for picket and fatigue duty.
Upon the 30th we received marching orders, and left our camping ground at 8 A. M. We moved to the extreme right of the enemy's position, which was near 'Poplar Grove Church, and came up with their skirmishers after a march of about two miles.
