The men in the trenches were obliged to keep under cover to protect themselves from the enemy's artillery and the constant fire of sharp shooters. On the 18th the regiment marched to the Weldon Railroad. During the action which ensued it was held in reserve. It returned to the left of the Weldon road, and in front of the Yellow House, " where it erected strong works. On the 19th the regiment moved rapidly to the right to the support of the 2d division of its corps, which had been attacked, but the enemy were repulsed before its arrival on the ground. Returning to its former position, on the 21st it was attacked by the enemy, who were driven off after a short but somewhat warmly contested action.
