First Michigan Infantry
on the 2d and 3d we fought the battle of 'Bethesda Church, ' on the ground over which we advanced on the 1st, losing one man killed and four wounded. We remained here in line of battle behind intrenchments until midnight of the 5th, when we withdrew, marching to 'Allen's Mills, ' where we were put on the picket line, and remained until the morning of the 6th, then marched to the vicinity of ' Sumner's Lower Bridge, ' on the Chickkahominy river, where we bivouacked and remained until the night of the 12th, picketing the river and guarding the bridges. On the night of the 12th we crossed the Chiekahominy at Long Bridge and marched to White Oak Swamp, ' to hold the roads and cover the crossing of the main army and wagon trains.
