First Infantry Civil War

First Michigan Infantry

We halted for a short time, during which the pieces were loaded and every preparation necessary for an advance was made. At 3 o'clock we were again in motion, leaving the main street, passing through a cross street to the left towards the battlefield, where we were exposed to a heavy fire from the enemy's batteries on the hill, killing and wounding many of our best and bravest men. On leaving the street, by filing obliquely to the right across a small stream, again obliquing to the left, when we were somewhat sheltered from the fire by a high bank, I halted the regiment, the right resting near the railroad, for about thirty minutes, waiting an opportunity to advance through other troops who were on the railroad, marched down the track some thirty rods, and turned to the left.
