fifth, Sixth & seventh Calvary
L. Captain, John Tony, Saginaw. First Lieutenant, Philip G. Corey, Galesburg. Second Lieutenant, James Mather, Pavilion. Second Lieutenant, Elliott F. Covell Grand Rapids.
M. Captain, John M. Pratt, Saranac. First Lieutenant, Harvey H. Vinton, Vergennes. Second Lieutenant, Benjamin F. Rockafellow, Lyons. Second Lieutenant, Ellas B. Stone, Bowne.
The regiment left its rendezvous at Grand Rapids fully mounted and equipped, but not armed, on the 10th of December, 1862, in command of Colonel George Gray, under orders to proceed to Washington.
While in the field, in 1863, a flag was procured and given to the 6th Cavalry by General James H. Kidd, of Ionia, then major of the regiment. This flag was borne through many battles, and is now in possession of the State. In the latter part of'1864 the citizens of Ionia had made a handsome silk flag, which was delivered to the regiment through the Hon. James H. Kidd, of that city. This flag, after being carried to the close of the war, was taken with the regiment to Wyoming on an expedition against the Indians, and was the first flag that floated over Fort Reno, on Powder river.
