Michigan Civil War
Eleventh Regiment Infantry
The march over the mountains was accomplished under great difficulties and at a test of great endurance on the part of the troops. On the 11th of September the regiment then serving in the 3d brigade, 2d division, 14th corps, was engaged in the affair at Davis's Cross Roads, assisting in covering the retreat of Negley's and Baird's divisions from Dug Gap. On the 19th and 20th of September the regiment, in command of Lieutenant Colonel Melvin Mudge, was in the fiercest of the fight at Chickamauga, and suffered a loss of six killed, 46 wounded, and 23 missing, Captain Chas. W. Newberry being among the killed.
