He was at once recognized by the soldiers and saluted with terrible groans and hisses which a regiment of soldiers can so forcibly administer. The driver of the carriage gave his horses the whip, putting them to their utmost speed toward the nearest hotel, chased by a large number of the regiment. Vallandigham hurriedly entered the hotel and probably made his escape through the back entrance, as the soldiers ransacked the building from cellar to garret without finding him.
