Michigan Civil War

Eighth Regiment Infantry

The 8th Michigan, Colonel Fenton's own, was in the direct advance, supported by the Highlanders, with the residue of both brigades ready and eager to do and dare all that men might; and if well directed valor could have carried the enemy's works by direct assault they would have done it. "
On July 5th the regiment, in command of Colonel Fenton, left James Island for Hilton Head, and on the 10th left on steamer for Beaufort, and on the 13th embarked on the steamship Vanderbilt for Fortress Monroe, and landing at Newport News on the 17th encamped.
