Eighth Regiment Infantry
During the remainder of April and the month of May the regiment was engaged on drill and picket duty on Port Royal Island with, occasional details on reconnoitering parties.
On June 1st, at 4 A. M., the regiment embarked, by lighters, on board the gunboat Alabama, below Beaufort, and lay at Hilton Head all day and night, steamed off Stone river, and on the 3d were transferred to the Metland, thence up Stone River, and landed at the old battery and bivouacked. On the 7th it was attached to the 1st brigade (2d division, General Stevens commanding), together with the 7th Connecticut and 28th Massachusetts, under command of Colonel Fenton, while the Regiment was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Frank Graves, and on the 16th became most signally distinguished in the assault made upon the enemy's works at Secessionville, on James Island, by a command of General Hunter's forces under General Benhain.
