The regiment having destroyed the railroad and built breastworks near Cuckwold Creek remained there until the 14th, when it marched to the Ashepoo river and built a bridge
across that stream, and on the 20th proceeding towards Charleston, reached the Ashley river on the 23d, which it crossed on the 27th and marched to the defenses on Charleston Neck, where it remained until March 9th, and was then ordered to take transports for Savannah, Ga., the right wing arriving at that point on the 11th and the left wing on the 16th.
