Embarking at this date, the regiment proceeded to Jacksonville, Florida, where it arrived on the 3d, On the following day it marched to Baldwin, a railroad junction, 21 miles from Jacksonville, where it was engaged on picket duty and in destroying railroad track. On the 11th of the month it was suddenly attacked by a force of rebel cavalry, which it easily repulsed and scattered, and by its splendid conduct on that 'occasion fully convinced its officers of the reliable and gallant fighting qualities of their men.
