We threw up a temporary work and got our guns into position at 3 o'clock A. M. of the 21st within 560 yards of the enemy's lines, and two and a half miles from the city. Soon after we opened a heavy fire, to which they vigorously replied. Early in the day we had the misfortune to lose Private Norman P. Austin of Hudson, who was shot through the head whilst bravely at work.
