"My loss was?7th Pennsylvania, 3 killed and 11 wounded; 4th Michigan, 1 killed and 1 wounded; 72d Indiana, 1 wounded; total, 4 killed and 13 wounded. " On May 27th, 1864, the rebel army was in position near Dallas, Ga. I got my brigade well in rear of their left and shelled their line for a couple of hours. Private Benona Birch, of Company I, was mortally wounded, living about half an hour after receiving his wound. Just before he expired he called his comrade to him and said, ' Mort, I am going, but hurrah for the Old Flag.' " Headquarters First Brigade, Second Cat.
