4th Cavalry
During the advance of the enemy Colonel Long burned the railroad depot, the iron works, and copper rolling mill at Cleveland, in which the enemy had a large amount of shell. Most of the shell had been transferred to the depot during the night, and on the approach of the enemy the explosion of the shell in such large quantity led the rebels to suppose it was the fire of a large artillery force, and they retired in the utmost confusion, giving the 4th Michigan an opportunity to fall back with all the prisoners in charge well secured, and before the enemy recovered and had time to renew the attack and pursuit, the command retired in good order,
